A poster to encourage men's engagement and involvement in their partners pregnancy. In their landmark book, The Secret Life of the Unborn Child, Verny & Kelly (1981) were some of the first to bring to light preliminary research that suggested that infants in the womb are influenced by their parents - mothers and fathers - and that the context of nurturing (or lack thereof) has a lasting impact on the infant and young child's development. Infants in the womb responded positively to father's voices, laughter and vocalised anger and tenderness. [more]

Across the African continent and across the political spectrum, we are all dedicated to ending the curse of fatherlessness that is maiming our children and coarsening our society. We call for an African fatherhood movement. As men and women, black and white, rich and poor, we are all committed to restoring the institution of loving fatherhood as the birthright of every child, the sure expectation of every mother, and the joyful obligation of every man who helps to bring a baby into this world. Whatever its other advantages, a society in which large and growing numbers of adult males cease to nurture their offspring is a failing society. [more]

The International Fatherhood Summit 2003 brought together practitioners and academics from twenty countries, including African fatherhood researchers and activists to discuss practical work, policy issues, the state of current research, and areas of international concern around fathers. They discussed issues such as: What are the current economic, social, cultural and political factors and trends that affect what fathers do? What does research tell us about the effects of fathering on child development? What lessons can be learned from existing experiences in addressing fatherhood issues? Supporting fathers provides a basis for further discussion and exploration on providing the best possible environment for the development of children by explicitly placing fathers within the concept of 'parenthood'. This document presents an updated overview of the key trends in the father involvement literature. While we are unable to provide methodological detail in such a succinct summary, we endeavoured to compile as accurately as possible, reliable research results that support these trends. It is clear from the research that father involvement has enormous implications for men on their own path of adult development, for their wives and partners in the coparenting relationship and, most importantly, for their children in terms of social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. This paper examines social construction of masculinity and manhood and gender socialisation among the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, with the aid of a combination of qualitative and quantitative data. The sample included male and female, young and old respondents, representing the Yoruba of the Southwest, the Igbo of the Southeast and the Hausa of the North. The study found that, in general, manhood is usually strongly associated with the social position in the family and the physical capability to satisfy the sexual needs of the female partner(s) and to produce children. Decision-making authority, including decision on reproduction, is largely vested in the man. Gender socialising for developing boys into men, including their sexual behaviour, is largely affected by instruction from the mother and the example of the father, while role enactment is closely monitored by the society. Even though significant socio-cultural differences between ethnic groups were found in gender socialising and the resultant roles, male dominance is pervasive and affects reproductive behaviour and health status of both males and females. Change in gender roles, including sexual relationships, will require enlightenment on the need for greater male responsibility in their relationship with females. [more]

Authors: James R, Katundu B Publisher: International NGO Training and Research Center Series/Journal Title: Praxis Paper Publication Date: 2006 Pages: 36 HIV/AIDS mainstreaming has traditionally been equated with adjusting programs to be more relevant to beneficiaries affected by HIV/AIDS. Bitter experience is demonstrating, however, that civil society organizations (CSOs) are not immune to the impacts of AIDS within their own organizations. Few local CSOs are responding adequately to this threat, partly because they simply do not know the extent of these costs. This paper suggests how CSOs in sub-Saharan Africa can build organizational resilience in order to survive the loss of valuable staff, time and money that HIV/AIDS will cause. It also concludes with practical recommendations for their donors in how they can move beyond being concerned bystanders. [publisher?s description] [more]

This brochure lays out key resources for working with men on issues related to sexual and reproductive health. The brochure aims to provide a framework for distinguishing among varied programmes, and illustrates the range within the framework with examples. It is an attempt to systematise what is available, and to explain some of the huge variability in existing materials. The brochure provides guidance for how male engagement can be a lens through which communities question norms about masculinity and programmes integrate approaches to gender equity. The categories into which the materials are organised are not mutually exclusive, and some publications appear more than once. This has been done so that whatever users' primary interests are, they can find relevant resources for their work. It provides programme reviews, case studies, evaluations, policy examples, and tools for each of five substantive areas: family planning/contraception; maternal and neonatal health and fatherhood; male identities and roles; sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV/AIDS prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; and gender-based violence. The women in Study II were positive to the individualised and professional care given at the MHC by empathic and professional midwives. They were positive to the increased involvement of their partner in the area of reproduction and family life since migrating to Sweden. According to the women, this may lead to an increased understanding by the fathers of the woman?s situation during pregnancy, birth and caring for the children as well as it could increase the fathers own emotional as well as practical involvement in their children. The foreign born men, in Study III, were positive towards antenatal care and to be able to take part as support to women at MHC, and during the delivery process. Côte d?Ivoire is the country worst affected by the HIV epidemic in West Africa, and young people in this country are a particularly vulnerable group. This study examined the relation between parental factors and sexual risk-taking among young people using logistic regression and survival analysis methods. Three parental factors (living in the same household as the father during childhood, perceived parental disapproval of early and premarital pregnancy, and parent-child communication about sexual abstinence) were positively associated with primary sexual abstinence (defined as yet to experience sexual debut), secondary sexual abstinence (defined as sexual abstinence subsequent to sexual debut) and reduced number of sex partners. The findings suggest that parental monitoring and control are important predictors of youth sexual behaviours and underscore the need to target parents and guardians in efforts to promote responsible sexual behaviours among adolescents. It is important to promote parent-child communication about sexual issues and empower parents and guardians to communicate effectively with their children and wards about sexual issues. [more]

A number of models have been proposed to account for humans? unique reproductive strategy, and it seems clear that all of the proposed pathways through which benefits can be realized must play some part in humans? decisions in certain contexts. The debate has truly been one of magnitude and is something that must be settled empirically. The most direct predictions of both the provisioning model and the mating effort model, however, fail to hold up to empirical scrutiny. In general, biparental care does not seem to be necessary for the successful rearing of children, yet men appear to be genuinely concerned with improving the wellbeing of their biological children. It was hypothesized that the World Bank assisted project on Nutrition and Early Child Development in Uganda would have an impact on parenting behaviors and attitudes about child development. This large-scale World Bank-assisted program operated in 35 districts during the period from 2000 to 2003. An experimental pre-post comparison group design (N=2250 families) was used to compare behaviors and attitudes of those who lived in the intervention area from those who did not. Results showed that at baseline there were few differences in attitudes and practices between groups. However at the final assessment, intervention mothers reported significantly more behaviors and positive attitudes supporting children?s learning and development compared to the control group. The intervention group was also more likely to report attitudes supporting father involvement. The data suggest that parenting behaviors and attitudes regarding stimulation and support for children?s development and learning can be changed through a program intervention at scale [more]

Data are drawn from seven Current Population Surveys to address four questions: What changes are evident across birth cohorts of men in the likelihood of living with children? What cohort differences are observed in the experience of living with many children or with preschool age children? How does the timing of living with children change across cohorts? To what extent do the observed patterns vary by race and level of education? Men?s experience of living with children declines precipitously across cohorts. More recent cohorts are less likelyto be characterized by the experience of large numbers of children. Living with children is increasingly concentrated in middle age. Finally, there are stark differences among men by race and level of education in the experience of living with children. [more]

Data collected in 1988 from men in a fertility and family planning survey in Kinshasa, Zaire, indicate that age at first sexual activity has declined from 19.6 among men aged 50 or older to 16.6 among those aged 20?29 at the time of the survey. Age at first formal marriage, however, has remained stable over time at about 25 years. Although polygyny is illegal in Zaire, about 8% of currently married men in this study have more than one wife. Marital dissolution is common: Among currently married men with one wife, 42% of those aged 55?60 have been married before. Almost 97% of marriages are formal, with informal marriages most common among young men and unemployed men. Almost 66% of men have fathered a child; that proportion rises from 12% of never-married men without a regular partner to 100% among previously married men with a partner; those who have fathered a child have an average of 5.1 children. Overall, almost 36% of men who are married or who have a partner have fathered a child with a woman other than their current wife or partner; these men have an average of 2.8 such children. The main aim of this paper is to examine critically the nature of childcare, including ideals and practices, in a resource-poor community through close ethnographic analysis of three sets of data generated over the course of two years. We argue that childcare in Masiphumelele should be conceptualised as having an emotional component that operates in parallel with, and is as important as, material provision and practical action. Further, the analysis reveals the extent to which childcare is shaped by poverty and must be thought about in relation to broader physical and social mobility, and the continuities within such movement. We also show that HIV can further shape childcare by challenging existing cultural practices, such as those pertaining to communication between children and adults regarding death. Future work on childcare would benefit from the conceptual approach adopted across this work, one which views children and their carers in a series of interrelated and dynamic contexts that include both kin and non-kin, and extend from the household to the broader family and friendship networks which support these multiple individuals. Fathers are involved in their children’s lives in a multitude of ways that go beyond the traditional roles of “economic provider” and “playmate.” However, few studies that include fathers tap all aspects of fathers’ involvement in children’s lives. Furthermore, the quality of father-child interactions is not as frequently studied or as well understood as is the quantity of father-child contact. This is especially problematic given the large number of U.S. fathers who do not live with their children. Researchers are now calling for an expansion of research to address aspects of father involvement that assess both quality and quantity and that examine direct and indirect forms of father involvement in children’s lives. This brief summarizes key research findings on new ways of thinking about father involvement and the roles that fathers play in children’s lives. [more]

On the other hand, the report demonstrates a void of knowledge about numerous groups of fathers. These ?fathers in the shadows? are uncounted or discounted in social, educational, and legal arenas. Whether due to the fathers? own choice ? or due to societal coercion, neglect, and oversight ? various groups of fathers are left uncounted. [more]

High literacy skills can equip a population to compete for quality jobs, to earn more, be healthier, build safer communities and take an active part in civic life. Evidence also shows that the benefits of literacy are intergenerational. A child?s best start is closely linked to the literacy levels of his parents. Because of the importance of this intergenerational transfer of skills, effective public policy must reach beyond formal schooling to address the life cycles of both adults and their children. ?Thinking? governments advance a life-long approach to learning understanding that success in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education, as well as in the workplace ?- gets a good start or not, depending on early experiences. The solutions are available. Supporting evidence is too. Only early childhood development (ECD) programs are in short supply. The disconnect defies logic, let alone science. When one stands back and looks at a life cycle and developmental approach to lifelong learning, the evidence is clear. It is imperative that Canada gets started on an early childhood system linked to, and as comprehensive and entrenched as, publicly-funded education. We hope our report will motivate governments and communities to take action. [more]

Understanding men?s sexual and reproductive preferences and behaviors as well as their roles as partners in sexual relationships, marriage and family building is essential to address their sexual and reproductive health information and service needs. Identifying and meeting these needs are crucial because the more informed and more effective men are in living safer and more fulfilling reproductive lives, the better it will be for not only them, but for their families as well. The sexual and reproductive behaviors and health needs of men aged 15-54 in 22 Sub-Saharan countries were examined using nationally representative data collected in these countries by the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) between 1994 and 2001.The study found that the years between first sex and marriage represent a period of enhanced risk of STIs and premarital pregnancy for many sexually active unmarried men in Sub-Saharan African (SSA). Men in SSA want and have large families. At age 40?54, men have had seven or more children in 14 of 21 countries with data, and about six children in the remaining six countries. However, desired family size is declining: Men 15?24 want fewer children than do men in their early 50s?around 4?6 children compared with 6?10 and more, respectively. Although substantial proportions of sexually active men have more than one partner, the majority are not using condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS and other STI. Men in SSA need targeted information to help them make informed choices in their sexual and reproductive behaviors. Men also need information to help them meet their responsibilities as husbands and fathers. Men, especially those who live in areas with high prevalence of HIV/AIDS and other STIs, need better access to condoms and health services for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of STIs. If these information and services are put within the reach of men, the gains for them will inevitably be gains for their partners and children. [more]

This case study is one of a number commissioned by the Save the Children Alliance as part of the Care and Protection of Separated Children in Emergencies project (CPSC). It was designed to complement a series of other studies which focused on children separated from their families in the context of armed conflict and forced migration. It was felt that the perspectives and experiences of children who live without their parents as a result of HIV/AIDS could inform and be informed by the experiences of war-affected children in various countries around the world. It was also hoped that in-depth information from children affected and infected by HIV/AIDS could provide some insight into how boys and girls understand the many facets of HIV/AIDS so that future interventions could be more effectively targeted. This study particularly focuses on the work of COPE in Malawi, a programme of Save the Children USA which mobilises communities to respond to a range of issues stemming from the AIDS epidemic. Although this research was not an evaluation of this programme, it was hoped that, by using research methods which would elicit detailed information from children, it would be possible to formulate some conclusions for future interventions. The growth of family work and family therapy has been a slow process outside of America. Family therapists in their homeland have to deal with the lack of training, resources, political red tape, ethnic differences, and language barriers to continue the work of family therapy. This article resolves to help readers to understand the diversity and the impact foreign therapists have in their own country and hopefully gain new respect for family therapy around the globe.
